King Midan himself was elven - but there are some very noticeable differences.â He gestured to the coronet. âElves typically use more wood and stone and natural things, but Pallens used more metals, such as gold, silver, or platinum. However, the main distinctness is in the use of gems.â
âWe saw that there was something different,â Der acknowledged.
âAye, we elves usually cut them very carefully so they reflect light, but Pallens didnât use cut gems often
at all.â
âWhat else can be done with gems?â
Kaleb smiled. âThey had a way of melting gems into whatever pattern or shape they wanted and somehow getting them to act as prisms too. Itâs beautiful. Even we didnât know how they did it.â
Der picked the coronet again and studied it intently for any imperfection. She ran her fingers over it to find a bump or maybe an air bubble. âItâs flawless, absolutely flawless.â She looked up at the prince. âA remnant of the old Empire. Iâm going to break it. I know my luck.â
He grinned. âIn that case, youâll just have to find another relic of Pallens to replace it.â
âSounds like an adventure.â She set the coronet back on its velvet pillow. She grinned, glancing around at
the encasing art and delicate, intricate architecture. âThis place is nothing like I ever imagined. Like that tree growing into the window there. Itâs obviously meant to be there.â The entire window and wall was part of a larger, intentional theme that included the tree, the plants and the ivy, both real and painted.
Kelin said, âAll the, well, I donât want to use the word streets - thatâs just too mundane, but all the avenues and walkways are so wide! An alley in Second Acron was barely wide enough for both me and Der. But here.â The prince smiled. âIâm glad that you find our little haven excitable.â
âYeah,â Kelin agreed. âI donât think Derâs feet have touched the ground yet.â
She raised an eyebrow. âWhat do you mean by that? I never had my feet on the ground, even in Riversbridge.â
âI know how you feel,â Kaleb said. âWeâll find ground though, and hit it running.â
She grinned. âAnd kicking too.â
He turned at a noise behind him, to see a patrol making it rounds throughout the city. He shook his head. âPatrols in an elven home. Iâll never get used to it.â
Der looked over his shoulders at the elves. The patrol walked in step, even their solemn faces exactly matched each other. Every one of them carried a sword, a bow and a lidded quiver strapped to their backs. Most of them were men, but a few women marched with them.
Kaleb muttered something in elvish under his breath.
Der blinked. âWell, that was rather rude.â
The prince stared at her. âHow in the corners of hell did you understand that?â
Her mouth hung wide. âOh, uh, the physician gave me the language when he healed me. I didnât ask for
it.â
Kelin waved a hand in front of Derâs face. âWhat the hell are you two saying?â
Kaleb ran his hand over his forehead and sighed.
